Mentally Preparing for the Holiday Season!
Who else absolutely cannot believe it’s already October?! I feel like I blink and a month has gone by… Which is why I wanted to take some time now to chat about mentally preparing for the holiday season.
Seems a little premature, but the way this year is flying by, we will be celebrating the holidays before we know it! And with halloween in a few days, I know the stress of holiday eating can creep up. So let’s get you in the right headspace and chat about how you can prepare yourself for the holiday season with three things to focus on..
SET REALISTIC GOALS. The biggest mistake/challenge I see a lot of people struggle with around the holiday season is their unrealistic expectations and goals that they are setting for themselves. We already know it’s the busiest time of the year between family gatherings, work parties, kids events, etc. So if you are expecting yourself to still make it to the gym 5x and meal prep and cook dinner every night… You are probably setting the bar too high. Not that we need to throw our goals and priorities out the window, but what I want you to focus on during these busier seasons of life is being REALISTIC with yourself. Can you confidently hit 3-4 workouts and be consistent with that rather than feeling like a failure for not making it your usual 4-5 days a week? Adjust your expectations with yourself during this busy time and work on setting realistic goals for what you know your lifestyle looks like during this season.
Don’t go into the holiday season already thinking you’ve thrown in the towel on your goals for the year. If you are already in a negative mindset and thinking that this time every year you know you give up and just aim to restart at the beginning of the new year, that’s where you are going wrong! Your mindset is everything and if you are already throwing in the towel before the end of the game, then you need to make sure you are working on your mindset first! Even if something doesn’t go according to plan and you miss a week of workouts or eat more sweets than you intended, that doesn’t mean you need to give up! Which brings me to #3…
Give yourself GRACE. This is sometimes the biggest challenge for my clients and what we work on first and foremost when it comes to fostering a healthy relationship with food, exercise, and their body. If you are too hard on yourself, you are simply never going to reach your goals. Not saying you won’t at times need to shut up your excuses and be disciplined to reach your goals, but if you are constantly beating yourself up and feeling like a failure, it’s going to be a heck of a lot harder for you to reach said goals. Understand that social events and the holidays can be a learning opportunity for you rather than a setback. Did you go to the party ravenously hungry and go crazy on food feeling miserable after? Did you binge on the halloween candy in the house because you were so stressed out? View these things as a learning opportunity for yourself to figure out why it happened and how you can focus on taking care of yourself and learning how to set yourself up for success the next time around. This takes time and sometimes also takes some additional support! Which is why having a coach during this season is so beneficial!
If you are someone who finds yourself stressed out over food, your goals, and how to prepare for the holidays, I want you to know that you are not alone! We are here to support you on your journey and want you to feel confident that you can go into the holiday season feeling confident and knowing that you can enjoy the season without feeling like a failure or that you have to start over at square one come the new year. I hope that focusing on these three things will help you feel more calm and confident going into the holiday season, but if you are looking for that extra support, accountability, and community to help guide you along the way, we would love to work with you!
